The review of the relevant literature published in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that the ability to delay gratification — by focusing on the long-term rather than the short-term effects of your decisions — can make healthy habits feel more satisfying.

The term “delayed gratification” might sound complicated, but it’s a concept you’ve probably come across before. One of the most common studies to explain the concept is the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment, in which a group of children were each given a marshmallow and told they could either a) eat the marshmallow, or b) wait 15 minutes and be given another.

Because delayed gratification is a skill we learn as we grow up, many of the kids gave up and ate the marshmallow in front of them — but some were able to wait and reap the reward of a second marshmallow.
