What Is ExpressVPN Aircove Router & How Does It Work in 2022

ExpressVPN just announced its new WiFi 6 router device, Aircove. What is ExpressVPN Aircove and why is it a big deal? The quick answer is that this router, which uses WiFi 6 technology, has built-in VPN protection from ExpressVPN. It is designed to protect all home devices while providing a fast and secure connection.

The central theses:

  • The Aircove router is ExpressVPN’s first foray into hardware devices, protecting everything in your home, from your laptop and computer to your smart TVs and IoT devices.
  • WiFi 6 enables faster and more reliable wireless connections, with Aircove allowing speeds of up to 1200Mbps on 5GHz and 600Mbps on 2.4GHz.
  • Aircove has a limited-time introductory price of $169 on Amazon; the normal price is $189.90.

Aircove takes ExpressVPN’s excellent VPN protection to the next level. This allows for incredible speeds and the ability to protect any internet-enabled device under one roof.

Additionally, setting up the Aircove router is incredibly easy, providing out-of-the-box protection and eliminating any manual setup. Stay with us as we explain more about Aircove.

ExpressVPN Aircove

Aircove is ExpressVPN’s first hardware device designed to protect the entire household of WiFi devices.

In a press release, ExpressVPN Vice President Harold Li explained the motivation behind founding Aircove.

“We’re reinventing digital home security with Aircove’s plug-and-play simplicity,” said Li. “It delivers our award-winning software in an easy-to-use router device, and we’re excited to offer users another way to experience the best of ExpressVPN to use throughout your home.”

Aircove can cover up to 1,600 square feet inside a home and is available now in the US (more on pricing later). Data shows that in an average US home, about 25 devices are connected to WiFi, including laptops, cell phones, tablets, smart watches, smart TVs, and more.

“That’s why we built Aircove to provide users with a simple, flexible VPN-protected internet connection in any room, on any device, for every member of the household,” said Li.

How does the ExpressVPN Aircove router work?

Aircove replaces your existing router. It offers a WiFi 6 internet connection, as well as built-in VPN protection out of the box – although you can also set some internet-enabled devices to do so Not connect to the VPN. Aircove’s user interface was designed to make it easy to customize your protection.

What is WiFi 6?

WiFi 6 is the next generation of WiFi and offers a faster and more reliable connection between devices. In theory, WiFi 6 can provide download speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps, which can be shared across multiple devices on a single connection.

Of course, VPN encryption slows down any internet connection. However, Aircove’s potential speeds are impressive. Even with active ExpressVPN encryption, Aircove allows speeds of up to 1,200 Mbit/s on 5 GHz and 600 Mbit/s on 2.4 GHz connections. We’ll test the reality of these speeds in our upcoming Aircove review.

device groups

Aircove offers a unique feature called “Device Groups” that allows users to group devices and assign each group its own VPN “location”.

For example, you can set your smart TVs to a UK server so you can stream your favorite UK shows with a UK IP address, while your mobile phone is set to France for mobile banking and your home printer is set to a group that bypasses the VPN .

You can have up to five groups for your devices and there is no limit to the total number of devices you can connect. Aircove’s potential is only limited by your maximum home connection speed.

Is ExpressVPN Aircove safe?

Yes, Aircove is safe. In June and July 2022, ExpressVPN had cybersecurity firm Cure53 perform a penetration test and source code review to ensure Aircove could be launched safely.

“Cure53 is pleased to report that upon completing this audit, the ExpressVPN team has established a best-in-class security level for the components under focus,” said Cure53. “Overall, the organization and quality of the code left a positive impression, indicating that security was a high priority during development and an essential aspect of the software lifecycle.”

Aircove also has a few security features worth noting. The router has an auto-update feature, so the device always has the latest features and security updates.

Additionally, users can share the WiFi network with visitors via a QR code scan instead of using a password. We’ll be evaluating the full scope of Aircove’s features in our upcoming Aircove review.
