Strong starts sees Dunloy through to final

Travel Ireland Coaches Senior Camogie Championship

Dunloy 1-12 Ballycastle 0-10

Dunloy’s strong start, which saw them 7-1 in the opening 22 minutes while keeping Ballycastle scoreless, set Dunloy up for a place in Saturday’s Travel Ireland Coaches Antrim Senior Camogie Championship final at Loughgiel. Ballycastle are likely to be happy with their overall performance but they will regret missing a couple of good scoring chances when the game was still within reach.

Dunloy dominated the opening 20 minutes, leading 1-7 to 0-0. The goal came in the 9th minute when Caoimhe Molloy’s low trajectory was blocked freely in Cassie McArthur’s path. Molloy sisters Caoimhe (four) and Katie (two) accounted for six of the points.

However, in the last eight minutes of half-time, Áine Donnelly and Rianna McBride each scored two points and suddenly Ballycastle were back in the game.

Despite Áine Magill pointing out the restart, Ballycastle put in a good performance and were 1-9 0-7 as they won a penalty with 12 minutes to go. Niamh Cosgrove hit the net but the goal was disallowed as the precinct defender entered the 20-metre line.

Knowing they were off the hook, Dunloy extended their lead with points from the Magill sisters and Nicole McAtamney before Niamh Cosgrove and Áine Donnelly completed the goal with late frees.

Dunloy really impressed in that opening spell as they kept their opponents scoreless. After that, however, they struggled and have much work to do over the next fortnight if they are to lift Loughgiel from her pedestal.
