Adequate calcium and protein intake is important to prevent osteoporosis. “We absorb less calcium as we age, and some women’s ability to tolerate dairy products — the best sources of calcium — also decreases with age,” says Jason Ewoldt, RDN, LD. “Dark leafy greens and calcium-fortified orange juice are other good sources. A healthy plant-based diet that doesn’t include meat, an important source of protein, can still provide plenty of protein if you make wise choices.”

Maintaining healthy relationships is key to healthy aging, doctors say. “Basically, you want to make sure you have healthy relationships with your significant other, your spouse, your kids, friends, all of that stuff, because good social health is really beneficial to any other illnesses that you might have.” says dr Kyle Bradford Jones, family physician at the University of Utah. “So that’s a big key to keep in mind.”

Sleep is vital to overall health and well-being, especially as we age. “Sleep is essential for optimal memory, learning, cognition, and mental health,” after Sophie Seward, MS, and Josiane Broussard, PhD, from the Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging at CSU. “Insufficient sleep is associated with an increased risk of depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline and car accidents.”

Keeping the body active is incredibly important for healthy aging, doctors say. “Well, this seems pretty easy, but this is so important.” says dr Jones. “So that’s exercise, that’s eating right, making sure you’re eating the right things, drinking lots of water, trying to avoid junk food, soda and things like that. This is the greatest thing that will help prevent cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, depression as well as other things. So if you keep these things in mind, you will age healthier. You will feel a lot better and you will be happier too.

Experts say getting the right amount of vitamin B-12 is critical for brain function over 50. “The best sources of vitamin B-12 are eggs, milk, lean meats, fish, and fortified foods like grains and cereals,” says Ewoldt. “Vegans in particular need to choose fortified foods, but even older people who eat all foods can struggle to get enough vitamin B-12.”
