During the course of the program he used a particularly speed-friendly track, that of Peter Blum company (f, 3, Gun Runner–Etiquette, from Tapit) built on a high profile win in the GIII Charles Town Oaks when he was last seen four weeks ago and ran them for a first Class I win at the Cotillion am Saturday from the legs S. at Parx.
As the outside gate was drawn in a field of nine, the loner was clicked as soon as the gates flew and crossed, clearing all inside traffic, and scored the first few furlongs in: 23 33 while being pursued by a California attacker Adare Manor (Uncle Mo), with her first start since a runner-up in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. on May 20, and “TDN Rising Star” Green Up (Upstart), whose 100 Beyer Speed Figure for their win at the local Cathryn Sophia S. on August 23 matched that earned by Society in West Virginia.
The company was moving right down the backstretch, while Florent Geroux was deliberately wide of the inside, and was half a mile away at :46.75 and, with nothing doing anything resembling a serious bid from behind, it was after six Furlongs in 1 clear: 10.93. morning matcha (Central Banker), a 45-1 underdog, skimmed the fence and made solid progress down the stretch, but it was all for naught as she never caught Society, who romped about six lengths. Winner by GI Longines Kentucky Oaks secret oath (Arrogate), touched by Green Up in the last few clicks out of favoritism, sped outward and clear down the backstretch but was angled in about three furlongs. Riding hard in the last quarter mile, Secret Oath stuck with a pace in third.
Society debuted for trainer Wayne Mackey at Keeneland last October and drew clear late to graduate nearly 28-1 but was traded to Steve Asmussen this year, who was one of the architects of Gun Runner’s career. The chestnut was the 1 3/4-long winner of a sloppy allowance about 50 minutes after Secret Oath won the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 6 and added a front-running win in the Monomoy Girl S on June 18, but at the start, the CCA Oaks stumbled, beating just one home in fourth. She was rated well by Tyler Gaffalione for the motor in the Charles Town Oaks and had plenty left when the actual race started and raced home to score by 6 3/4 lengths.
With the victory, Society is already Gun Runner’s sixth top scorer and, alongside GII Adirondack S. winner Wicked Halo, one of the two licensed winners of the stallion out of a Tapit mare. Also bred on the Gun Runner/Tapit cross is SW Red Run, while Tapit’s sire Pulpit is the broodmare sire of SW Optionality. Also bred at the crossroads is Echo Again, who made it “TDN Climber” Status for a Maid Fair in Saratoga on August 20th.
Produced by a half-sister to GSW Pleasant Prince (Indy King), Society descends from the extended female family of Sovereign Award and Queen’s Plate winner Holy Helena (Ghostzapper) and Midlantic-based sire Holy Boss (Street Boss). year-old half-brother named Punctuality in training at Churchill Downs, a year-old half-sister Finesse (Street Sense) who sold to Windancer Farm for $725,000 at the just-concluded Keeneland auction in September, and a colt-like half-brother named Valor (Omaha Beach) . Etiquette was brought back in foal by Gun Runner last breeding season.
