Neville: “There were three buses? On a Friday you would have a few pints on the way home before a game on Saturday.”

Scholes: “I know. Crazy, madness.

“Sometimes we stayed in there from 12:30 p.m. to 8 or 9 a.m., I’m not proud of that, in front of the A and B teams on a Saturday night.”

Neville: “And you would still be fine?”

Scholes: “Sometimes. Mostly, but that was my lifestyle. I grew up in pubs as a kid.

“Wherever I went with my mum and dad as a kid, it was a pub, whether I was standing in front of the pub and kicking a ball against the wall. Kids weren’t allowed in the pubs so I was outside all the time waiting for my mum and dad.

“I remember when I was 16, 17 or 18, when I was on the youth team, Eric Harrison called my dad and said, ‘We’re a little worried about Paul’s drinking.’

Neville: “Did you know about it?”

Scholes: “You must have done it, I don’t know how. Whether someone insulted me or not, I don’t know.”

Neville joked: “Probably Phil!”

Scholes: “They said they were a bit worried about my drinking. I remember my father saying, “He’s allowed to enjoy himself, right?”

“I was like ‘f*** dad, you really shouldn’t say that. No, no, he doesn’t drink.”

“That’s how I was raised [on]. He went out Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and sometimes on a Monday.”

Neville: “Did you drink that often during the week? I didn’t know that myself.”

Scholes: “I didn’t tell anyone anything, did I?

“By the time I turned 18, I probably was. All my buddies were in the pub the whole time.

“I would often come to a pub on a Sunday morning to watch my buddies play football.”
