Can you get compensation from Air Canada for lost bags?

“The airlines are pointing fingers at each other and no one will be held accountable for our lost luggage and I cannot report.”

A Vancouver man says a relaxing European vacation with his girlfriend was ruined after the couple’s bags went missing after a canceled flight.

The travelers were originally booked on an Air Canada flight departing from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Aug. 28 and stopping at Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ) before flying to Lisbon, Portugal.

However, a few days before their scheduled departure, the outbound flight was canceled and the two were rebooked on a Vancouver to Boston flight and then a Boston to Lisbon flight. Before boarding their outbound flight, YVR experienced a significant delay and they arrived in Boston after their second flight had already departed.

Robert Meca tells Vancouver is great that the couple was rebooked on a Delta flight and told their luggage would be transferred to the new aircraft.

“Of course it didn’t arrive,” he explains. “I was told I could file a report online or over the phone.”

After unsuccessfully attempting to file a report online “countless times”, the disgruntled traveler returned to Lisbon Airport five days later, but they informed him it was too late to make a report and that he could had to do with the airline, which he did. “I’ve been trying all along.”

Because the numbers he had to call were North American, Meca’s mother began calling for her son every day while he was away. At one point, she spent 10 hours trying to reach someone.

“She was hung up on, put on hold for hours and then disconnected or told there was nothing they could do,” he says. “Air Canada tells me it’s Delta’s fault and Delta says they don’t have a record of our baggage.

“I really don’t know what to do. The airlines are pointing fingers at each other and no one will be responsible for our lost luggage and I cannot file a complaint.”

While his bags have Air Canada tags on them, airline officials urged Meca to contact Delta. But when they returned to Vancouver on September 19, an Air Canada agent was able to make a report about the lost luggage.

“That caused me a lot of stress during what was supposed to be a relaxing holiday. My mother was also stressed and even postponed work to help us. I wasted a lot of time and so did she,” he explains. “I had to go to great lengths to buy new clothes and all my necessities, even though I had just bought everything I needed before I left.

“When boarding the plane, my friend’s agent said there was no space for her carry-on luggage and that it needed to be checked underneath. They also lost that which contained all their makeup, hair dryer etc throughout the trip She had none of this which upset her and also didn’t make her feel good while we were out.

Meca adds that he will “never fly Air Canada again” and feels the airline is avoiding responsibility. He is hoping for compensation for the lost luggage as well as the clothes he had to buy while in Europe.
